They are wrong。

For Louis has come to Europe to hunt them down: five killers to be found and punished before they can vanish into the east。

No matter how many books sit in my 'to read' pile, the John Connolly Charlie Parker series books always attain 'next read' status when released。 I mean other than the very rare 3 star offering, they are all genuine 4 star (and upward) reads。 I was a little anxious about this one though。 I can't recall the title, but there was a prior Parker story where Charlie Parker himself didn't achieve centre status。 It was still a fine book, but well, not quite the same。 My subconscious was giving me the sa No matter how many books sit in my 'to read' pile, the John Connolly Charlie Parker series books always attain 'next read' status when released。 I mean other than the very rare 3 star offering, they are all genuine 4 star (and upward) reads。 I was a little anxious about this one though。 I can't recall the title, but there was a prior Parker story where Charlie Parker himself didn't achieve centre status。 It was still a fine book, but well, not quite the same。 My subconscious was giving me the same amber flag here too!But alas I was wrong, this one really worked。 Parker had really no part at all but the character of Louis (and to a lesser extent, Angel) really worked well as the chief protaganist。 I would've given this 4。5 / 5 stars but the history lessons throughout were possibly a little too detailed。 The underlying story however was very strong and I enjoyed it all。I wonder what the next book will look like。 After a long line of Parker quality books, the last Parker modern time novel 'A Book of Bones' (the 3 starrer above) didn't quite work for me。 That was followed by 'The Dirty South' (a prequel) which was excellent and now this Louis / Angel led mystery。 Maybe he's just mixing things up, but whatever is happening this series continues to impress。 Highly recommended。 。。。more

I am the biggest fan of the Charlie Parker series and await the books with anticipation but this was not Charlie Parker 19, it was very much Angel and Louis 1。The story is of Louis and Angel avenging an old friend, and that take takes us to Eastern Europe and the dark underworld of crime,Whilst the book has many of Connolly’s trademarks the trio, reduced to the backing duo just seems to have lost a spark。It’s not as dark as some reviews suggest, for Connolly it even feels a little less macabre。 I am the biggest fan of the Charlie Parker series and await the books with anticipation but this was not Charlie Parker 19, it was very much Angel and Louis 1。The story is of Louis and Angel avenging an old friend, and that take takes us to Eastern Europe and the dark underworld of crime,Whilst the book has many of Connolly’s trademarks the trio, reduced to the backing duo just seems to have lost a spark。It’s not as dark as some reviews suggest, for Connolly it even feels a little less macabre。 There are hints about Parker and of course he is there in very small doses but as a huge fan this book feels a little out of place and lost in the Parker series。Nevertheless I enjoyed it as I do all the books, just not as much as I would if Charlie had some involvement as it’s lacking the chemistry of the whole band together。 。。。more

Charlie Parker #19, except Parker makes only a cameo appearance or two。 This book focuses on Louis and Angel。 It might be enjoyed without having read the prior books in the series but a few things would be quite weird, such as the appearance of Parker's dead daughter Jennifer。 However, while Jennifer's presence (and that a seemingly teenage girl) add a bit of the supernatural flavor, this one is basically Louis doing what he does best -- killing。 Louis is not your typical killer for hire, at lea Charlie Parker #19, except Parker makes only a cameo appearance or two。 This book focuses on Louis and Angel。 It might be enjoyed without having read the prior books in the series but a few things would be quite weird, such as the appearance of Parker's dead daughter Jennifer。 However, while Jennifer's presence (and that a seemingly teenage girl) add a bit of the supernatural flavor, this one is basically Louis doing what he does best -- killing。 Louis is not your typical killer for hire, at least not since he met Parker。 And Louis is not being paid for this job。 Rather he is avenging the brutal killing of friends - De Jaager and four others who figured prominently in an earlier book。 Angel, with help from friends, arranges a fake kidnapping that helps lead to the location of core bad guys。 Louis comes up with creative ways of killing, including the use of a drone and a hammer。 The FBI even lends a hand。As always, I thoroughly the entry in the Charlie Parker series。 There was even a brief scene in Maine at the Great Lost Bear where the Fulci brothers take out two gangsters using a tire iron and a bear head。 I've seen that bear head and it's darn big。 。。。more

Another year and another book from the Charlie Parkers series sees the light of day。 I had pre-ordered this novel but some EU tax law came into being from the 1st of July that any package coming outside the EU is taxing the package。 Which means that the English language books have become a lot more expensive, my initial pre-order got cancelled because of that and I had to re-order and the price was almost doubled。Anyhow Charlie Parker does play a very small part in this book as it is more about Another year and another book from the Charlie Parkers series sees the light of day。 I had pre-ordered this novel but some EU tax law came into being from the 1st of July that any package coming outside the EU is taxing the package。 Which means that the English language books have become a lot more expensive, my initial pre-order got cancelled because of that and I had to re-order and the price was almost doubled。Anyhow Charlie Parker does play a very small part in this book as it is more about Louis and Angel whose friends in Amsterdam have met their early demise from this mortal soil in a most gruesome way in the hands of Serbian criminals。 I want to advise any Serbian reader to skip this particular book as the baddies are the Serbians and the war crimes the committed in the Balkan wars, the book does give you an explanation what happened there after Tito died and with him Yugoslavia。It is a far more revenge story and little history lesson in recent European history, and it is the friends of Parker that are asked to clear the problem some Serbians have created, in which they get some unofficial support from government organisations who would gladly deny them if they should fail。This book also shows an interesting role of one Jennifer Parker and of course the paranormal side that has its roots in Balkan history, which does add to the flavour of the story。I try not to spoil to much but once more a book that is very hard to put away as you want to read it in one sitting and yet also want to enjoy the taste for a longer time。 Connolly has once again proved that he is a master storyteller and his Parker universe still has some stories to tell and if he keeps up this level of quality I keep buying his books。 。。。more

Always good to spend time with Louis and Angel。I enjoyed the cat and mouse chase but felt the end was rushed。 This is not the book to start this long series with though。 Loved the teaser with Jennifer at the very end, and earlier when CP is identified as key for Jennifer's "existence"。 Ready for the next instalment! John Connolly’s books never disappoint。 The characters are well defined and believable, the plots never disappoint, can’t wait for the next one。 This book mainly concerns louis and angel and parker is hardly in it, but for all that, it is still a very good read。 This is a tale of revenge and murder and serbian criminals。 So just go out and BUT it you will enjoy despite some negative reviews。

Nice to see a story with Louis as the main heavy。 Lots of people getting double crossed and avenged。

Thanks for another 'Charlie Parker' novel, Mr Connolly。I'm sorry to say that I was disappointed in this one。 There's a lot in it and John has done the work on the Serbian criminal side of things, but where was Charlie。 That's who I look forward to journeying with。 And also (sorry I'm a slack westerner) but I don't know how to pronounce the Serbian names, which were written often, and that disconnected me from the story - and disengaged me。 Because it's not what I was expecting with a Charlie Par Thanks for another 'Charlie Parker' novel, Mr Connolly。I'm sorry to say that I was disappointed in this one。 There's a lot in it and John has done the work on the Serbian criminal side of things, but where was Charlie。 That's who I look forward to journeying with。 And also (sorry I'm a slack westerner) but I don't know how to pronounce the Serbian names, which were written often, and that disconnected me from the story - and disengaged me。 Because it's not what I was expecting with a Charlie Parker novel。So some people will love it - maybe just because they enjoy John's writing。 But I enjoy the engagement with Charlie, in a Charlie Parker series。 It was missing。 。。。more

After a trip back to right before the very beginning of the Charlie Parker series with The Dirty South, John Connolly takes another sidestep from the main plot。 The Nameless Ones is the second novel after The Reapers that lets Parker's friends/partners in crime Louis and Angel take the lead while the private detective himself takes the backseat。The Dutch fixer De Jaager and his associates are brutally murdered and left for display by a group of Serbian gangsters/war criminals led by two brothers After a trip back to right before the very beginning of the Charlie Parker series with The Dirty South, John Connolly takes another sidestep from the main plot。 The Nameless Ones is the second novel after The Reapers that lets Parker's friends/partners in crime Louis and Angel take the lead while the private detective himself takes the backseat。The Dutch fixer De Jaager and his associates are brutally murdered and left for display by a group of Serbian gangsters/war criminals led by two brothers, the Vuksans, right before they intend to return so their homeland after years in exile in the Netherlands。 De Jaager had one of the Vuksans' associates, a hitman, torturer and sadist, killed and the more deranged of the two brothers, the other one being more of an organiser and tactician, wanted revenge。Unfortunately, the brutal murders kick loose an avalanche of problems for the Vuksan brothers。 The Serbian government is trying to polish up the countries image because Serbia wants to join the EU and a group of out of control gangsters with a background as war criminals in the Balkan Wars don't exactly help with that。 Furthermore, their rivals in Serbia also have it out for them, so returning home becomes a bit of a problem。But the even bigger problem is that De Jaager was a close friend of Louis, who also happens to be the one who took out the Vuksans' associate in the first place。 Of course, the semi-retired hitman won't let the bestial murder of one of his few friends slide and so he and his partner Angel go on a manhunt that leads them through half of Europe with the intent of killing each and everyone of those who took part in the massacre。As previously mentioned, Parker himself takes the backseat。 He makes a few short appearances, but essentially, Louis and Angel try to keep him out of this one。 Also, the Fulcis, who have become a series favourite for me over the years, have an awesome and hilarious cameo in The Nameless Ones。 Probably their best one yet。 The one other series regular who actually DOES play a bigger role is Parker's dead daughter Jennifer, who assists Louis and Angel from the beyond and thereby closes the circle to the more supernatural aspects of the series。Last but not least, a quick reminder that the Charlie Parker novels tend to have some incredibly brutal scenes and a warning that The Nameless One is no exception。 The murders of De Jaager and his associates/friends is especially gut-wrenching。 Mentions, although luckily not depictions of rape and torture included。 While the brutality and ruthlessness of the Serbian gangsters seems to be over the top at times, it also helps to make you really hate those guys and quicky leads readers to the conclusion that they deserve everything they are about to get。Once again, this is another outstanding addition to a long running series that just doesn't let up and although this is sort of a deviation, the scenes with Jennifer bridge the gap to the main plot and have some serious implications for future novels。 With the background of the villains in the Nameless Ones, John Connolly also shines an important spotlight on the bestial war crimes commited during the Balkans Wars。 And while the Vuksans and their associates might be slightly overexaggerated in their capacity for violence and their sheer thirst for blood, it's also important not forget what happened not even 20 years ago right on Europe's doorstep with the world watching。 。。。more

A rare solo outing for Louis & AngelReally good to have another book in the series that focuses on Angel and Louis, and interesting to have the backdrop of the fallout from the civil wars and atrocities following the collapse of Yugoslavia。 I really enjoyed the build up and hunt for the Vuksans during the course if the Book, and it was fascinating that Jennifer also watches over Louis。 However, 4 stars rather than 5 as the ending seemed a bit too easy。

Charlie Parker plays a cameo role in this latest book in the Parker series, but that in no way detracts from how good this book is。 The central characters are Parker's friends, Angel and Louis, and the action has moved to Europe。 You just know that bad things are going to happen to bad people when Angel and Louis are involved。Seriously folks, if you're not acquainted with the Parker series you really are missing out on a treat。 Charlie Parker plays a cameo role in this latest book in the Parker series, but that in no way detracts from how good this book is。 The central characters are Parker's friends, Angel and Louis, and the action has moved to Europe。 You just know that bad things are going to happen to bad people when Angel and Louis are involved。Seriously folks, if you're not acquainted with the Parker series you really are missing out on a treat。 。。。more

Pure, unadulterated brilliance of the most natural kind。I always start a Connolly review with wow, just wow, so I thought I’d mix it up。Parker takes a back seat in this instalment but still plays a crucial role。 How many authors can drop the main character in a series for a book and still be so gripping?
